Chess and Music

Monday, December 9 at 6pm
Centre Culturel Français, via Pomba 23
Lecture on "Mozart, Haydn, Philidor or the uncertainties of the profession". Lecturer, the musicologist Corrado Rollin, author of the essay "Philidor, the chess-playing musician". The lecture, accompanied by passages from the music of Philidor, will look at the birth of professionalism which moved its first timid paces in the Eighteenth Century in both music and chess. The links between music and chess will also be discussed.


Chess and Literature

Lecture on "Chess in the history of literature". Speaker Paolo Maurensig, author of the novel “La variante di Lüneburg”.

Chess and Artificial Intelligence

ILO (BIT) Lecture hall, 125 Corso Unità d'Italia Lecture on "A Short History of Artificial Players" by Paolo Ciancarini, Lecturer in Information Technology at Bologna University and author of the essay "The Artificial Players".


Chess on Display
And exhibition of games and chess boards

An evocative stroll through the city centre, will take visitors on a voyage of discovery or rediscovery as they encounter the delights of Turin's history-laden colonnades and squares with their ancient cafes and an infinite variety of shopping experiences to satisfy every taste. Here in the heart of the city, Scaccomatto will also be making its presence felt in a rather unusual way. The windows of many shops along piazza Vittorio, via Garibaldi, piazza Statuto, via Cibrario, via XX Settembre, piazza San Carlo, via Palazzo di Città, via Pietro Micca, piazza Carlo Felice, piazza Paleocapa, corso Vercelli, corso Belgio, corso Giulio Cesare will be displaying dozens of games and chess boards kindly donated by private collectors. A window onto a world of its own, showing how chess has been interpreted in dozens of countries on five continents.


Chess in Turin's Historic Cafes

Throughout Scaccomatto, Turin's Baratti & Milano, Fiorio, Platti and Torino cafes will make several chessboards available to players, thereby reviving an ancient tradition that has gradually disappeared from the city with the closing of many chess cafes. Simultaneous games against Turin Chess Club Masters will be held on Tuesday-Thursday December 10-12 at 6-8 p.m.

Chess at the Associassion Piemontèisa

At 7 p.m. on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 December, all chess fans are invited to a "merenda sinoira" (the traditional Piedmontese version of the "High Tea") on the Association's premises at 6, via Vanchiglia. The "merenda" will be followed (at 8.30-11.00 p.m.) by a chess exhibition given by a Turin Chess Club Master. Tickets cost Lit. 20,000. To book, telephone ++39-11-8127411-8127511.
